Die Frage, ob ich mir für mein Buch ein gutes Cover leisten sollte, beschäftigt sehr viele Autoren. Dabei ist die Antwort sehr einfach. Ja! Jedes Buch soll ein gutes Cover haben. Das Cover ist immer Teil der Geschichte. Es zeigt entweder die Protagonisten des Romans, den Ort an dem er spielt, oder die Atmosphäre, die der Autor seiner Geschichte gegeben hat. Es spricht also alles dafür, dass man seinem Baby, wenn ich das man so ausdrücken darf, gute Kleider kauft. Ich bin mir sicher, dass sich jeder Autor das so wünscht. Dennoch trifft man ab und zu auf Kollegen, die ihrem Werk eine Coverillustration zumuten, die jeden Leser abschrecken muss. Cover, die jedes künstlerische Können vermissen lassen. Manche Illustrationen sind geradezu hässlich und abstoßend. In einer Diskussion über diese Tatsache finde ich oft verhärtete Fronten, in denen jedes noch so dilettantische Cover als Strategie ausgegeben wird, den potentiellen Leser für den großartigen Inhalt zu begeistern. Das Argument ist etwa so stichhaltig, als wolle man jemanden raten, sich seine exquisite Wohnungseinrichtung auf dem Wertstoffhof zusammenzusuchen. Es mag durchaus Künstler geben, denen das vorzüglich gelingt, aber das dürfte ehe die Ausnahme sein. Hier liegt vielleicht auch der Hund begraben. Denn wenn ich ein Fazit aus den Diskussionen ziehe, liegt es einfach am Geiz des Autors. Dieses Faktum blitzt immer wieder auf und ist wohl der Hauptgrund für Buchcover, die bestenfalls als Dekoration in einem Horrorkabinett dienen können. Dabei bieten talentierte Illustratoren, solide Arbeiten an, die man sich leisten könnte. Ich kenne etliche dieser Künstler, die sich weit unter Wert verkaufen und von diversen Schreiberlingen noch tiefer im Preis gedrückt werden. Hinzu kommen unzählige Wünsche, was auf dem Bild zu sehen sein soll. Welche Helden in welchen Posen darauf abgebildet sein sollen. Es gibt Illustratoren, die vierzig Stunden an ihrem Computer saßen, auf jeden noch so kleinen Wunsch ihres Auftraggebers eingegangen sind und beschimpft wurden, nachdem sie anmerkten für den Aufwand etwas mehr berechnen zu müssen. Es blieb dann bei 150€, für ein gutes Motiv, dass durchaus 500€ oder 700€ wert gewesen wäre.
Ich bin fest der Ansicht, dass das Werk eines Autors, dem 300 Euro oder 400 Euro für eine ansehnliche Illustration zu viel sind, keinen großen Wert besitzen kann. Hätte es Qualität, die sich letztendlich ich den Verkäufen niederschlagen sollte, müsste er keine Angst vor diesen Ausgaben haben. Ein gutes Cover wirbt für das Buch! Wenn Inhalt und Cover Qualität besitzen, sollte dem Erfolg nichts im Wege stehen.

Do I need a good cover for my book?
The question of whether I should afford a good cover for my book is one that occupies many authors. But the answer is very simple. Yes! Every book should have a good cover. The cover is always part of the story. It shows either the protagonists of the novel, the place where it takes place, or the atmosphere that the author has given to his story. So there is everything in favor of buying your baby, if I may put it that way, good clothes. I’m sure that’s what every author wants. Nevertheless, every now and then you come across colleagues who inflict on their work a cover illustration that must put off any reader. Covers that lack any artistic ability. Some illustrations are downright ugly and repulsive. In a discussion about this fact, I often find hardened fronts where any cover, no matter how amateurish, is passed off as a strategy to get the potential reader excited about the great content. The argument is about as valid as advising someone to pick up their exquisite home furnishings at the recycling center. There may well be artists who succeed in doing this excellently, but that should be the exception. Perhaps this is the crux of the matter. Because if I draw a conclusion from the discussions, it is simply because of the author’s stinginess. This fact flashes up again and again and is probably the main reason for book covers that can at best serve as decoration in a horror cabinet. Yet talented illustrators, offer solid work that could be afforded. I know several of these artists who sell themselves far below value and are pushed even lower in price by various scribblers. In addition, there are countless wishes as to what should be on the picture. Which heroes should be depicted in which poses. There are illustrators who sat forty hours at their computer, responded to every little wish of their client and were insulted after they remarked that they had to charge a little more for the effort. It remained then with 150€, for a good motive that would have been worth quite 500€ or 700€.
I am firmly of the opinion that the work of an author for whom 300 euros or 400 euros for a handsome illustration is too much, can not have great value. If it had quality, which should ultimately be reflected in sales, he should not be afraid of these expenses. A good cover promotes the book! If content and cover have quality, nothing should stand in the way of success.
